Wayanad is the greener part of kerala. It is located in the north-east of kerala. And it was formed on November 1 , 1980 as the 12th district of kerals. It is located at a distance of 76 km. from the sea shores of Kozhikode, this verdant hill station is full of plantations, forests and wildlife. The name Wayanad is believed to have been derived from the word, Vayalnadu, meaning the 'land of paddy fields'. It is house to unique patented varieties of rice such as "Jeerakasala" and "Gandhakasala". Most of the reserve forests in the State are in this district. A large percentage of the population in this region are tribals. The native Adivasis mainly consist of various sects like Paniyas, Kurumas, Adiyars, Kurichiyars, Ooralis, Kattunaickens etc.

The main tourist attractions of wayanad are Chembra park, Edaykal cave,
Kuruvas island, Lakkidi, Pakshipathalam, Pookot lake, Soochippara waterfalls,
Thirunelly, Wayanad wild life sanctuary.
