Sasthamcotta is one of the most attractive village, which is situated about 29km from Kollam town and 75kms from Trivandrum. It is an endless fresh water lake, which is the largest fresh water lake in Kerala. Sasthamcotta lake is also called as “The Queen of Lake”. It is categorizes as a wetland. This dazzling spot is a health center as well as a center of pilgrimage. Sasthamcotta is the lounge of the famous ancient Dharma Sastha Temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Lord Ayyappa and the monkeys inhibiting the premises are considered holy. The Lord Ayyappa has spiritual ambience about them. The monkeys are devotee friendly and the thousands of devotees visiting the temple share pleasure in feeding them. The place is gifted with natural beauty and all sides except the south of the lake is surrounded by hills and vallies. A bund has been constructed on the south separating the lake from the neighboring rice fields. This place is blessed with hygienic weather and a population with peaceful arrangement. This devoted place is connected to every part of Kerala by rails and roads. The lake is covered by an area of approximately 375 hectors. The lake is used for fishing and serves as the source of drinking water for half a million people of Kollam district. The source of water is from the underground dawns. The purity of the lake water is due to the presence of larva called cavaborus that consumes bacteria in the lake water. The wetland holds 27 species of fresh water fishes and two categories of prawns. Many outsiders all over the world are attracted to the natural beauty of Sasthamcotta. The lake is a designated wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention since November 2002.
