Munro Island Dutch church in Munroe Island

Munro Island Dutch church

The Dutch Church in Munroe Island, Kollam is one of the elderly and primal churches in Kerala and was built by the Dutch in 1878. It is on the panoramic banks of Lake Ashtamudi and is a blend of Dutch-Kerala architecture. Currently, the church is in a deserted state with the only Christian family in the locality looking after the affairs of this Church. It is a good example of communal harmony since the annual church festival is conducted with the help of Hindu population in this area.
The island is accessible by road, rail and inland water navigation and is about 25kms from Kollam by road, 12kms west from Kundara and about 25kms from Karunagapally. The nearest railway station is 3kms away, while the nearest airport is the Trivandrum International Airport which is about 84kms from the island. Some of the island’s focal attractions include the narrow waterways, canal cruises and the celebrated Kallada Boat Race held here during the 10-day festival of Onam.
